🗓 3 March 2026 | Public Holiday | No Alcohol Sales

🙏 Makha Bucha Day + 🌕 Total Lunar Eclipse

📍 Wat Phra Singh · Wat Chedi Luang · All temples citywide

One of Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist holidays, Makha Bucha commemorates the day 1,250 disciples spontaneously gathered to hear the Buddha preach. Every temple in Chiang Mai holds a candlelit circumambulation ceremony (Wien Thian) after sunset—walking three times around the main stupa while carrying flowers, incense, and a lit candle. The atmosphere at Wat Chedi Luang in the heart of the Old City is genuinely magical—and far easier to reach than Doi Suthep.

🌕 2026 Lunar Eclipse Bonus: This year a total lunar eclipse begins at 15:44 local time and peaks in the early evening. Look southeast from anywhere in Chiang Mai.

⚠️ Important: All restaurants and convenience stores are prohibited from selling alcohol for the full 24 hours. Plan your evening accordingly.

🚗 Getting to Wat Chedi Luang for Wien Thian
Wat Chedi Luang is right in the center of the Old City on Phra Pokklao Road—easily walkable from most Old City hotels. From Nimman, a Grab ride costs approx. ฿60–80 (10 min).

🌈 Chiang Mai Holi Festival 2026 (Colour Powder Festival)

📍 Cultural Square, Chiang Mai University (CMU)

Organised by the Bharata Vidya (Indian Studies) department of CMU, this free-to-enter Holi celebration is one of Chiang Mai’s most joyful single-day events. Coloured powder is thrown in waves throughout the afternoon while live music, Indian dance performances, and food stalls fill the CMU cultural grounds. Everyone is welcome — students, locals, and tourists alike.

💡 Tips for first-timers: Wear an all-white outfit · Seal your phone in a zip-lock bag · Bring safety glasses or swim goggles · Coloured powders are non-toxic and wash out of most fabrics.

🚗 Getting There
From Nimman/Old City: A Grab ride costs approx. ฿50–80. By bicycle, CMU is very bikeable from Nimman — main gate on Huay Kaew Road. By songthaew, ask for “Mahawitthayalai Chiang Mai” (มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่).

🎏 Poy Sang Long — Shan Novice Ordination Festival

📍 Wat Ku Tao · Wat Pa Pao · Wat San Phi Suea · Chiang Mai

One of the most visually spectacular cultural festivals in all of Northern Thailand — and still little-known to most international visitors. Boys aged 7–14 from Shan (Tai Yai) communities are dressed as princes in elaborate royal costumes of silk, gold jewellery, and floral crowns, then carried on the shoulders of relatives in colourful processions around the temple grounds, before being ordained as novice Buddhist monks.

The 3-day ceremony typically includes:
Day 1: Boys are dressed and presented at the temple; community feast.
Day 2: Grand procession — the most photogenic part — carried on shoulders around the temple with music, dancing, and offerings.
Day 3: Formal ordination ceremony inside the temple.

📷 Photography etiquette: The festival is free and open to the public. Always smile and ask permission before photographing the boys or their families up close. Remove shoes before entering temple buildings.

🚗 Getting to Wat Ku Tao (most popular venue): Located just north of the Old City moat, near the Superhighway. From Tha Phae Gate: approx. 15-minute Grab ride (฿60–80). By bicycle: ~20 min north from the Old City via Chotana Road.

Weekly Schedule

Night Markets & Walking Streets in Chiang Mai

🗓 Every Sunday | 16:00–22:00

🛍 Sunday Walking Street — Tha Phae Gate (ถนนคนเดินท่าแพ)

📍 Tha Phae Gate → Ratchadamnoen Road, Old City Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai’s biggest weekly market closes Ratchadamnoen Road to traffic every Sunday evening. Over 500 vendors line the 1 km stretch from Tha Phae Gate to Wat Phra Singh, selling hand-crafted jewellery, silverwork, silk scarves, wood carvings, ceramics, and an enormous variety of street food. It’s the single best night for strolling the Old City.

What to buy: Silver jewellery, lacquerware, hand-woven fabrics, Thai herbal products, local art prints. Bargaining is expected — prices are already quite fair.

🚗 Getting There: Walkable from most Old City guesthouses. From Nimman: 10-minute Grab (฿60–80). The road is pedestrianised from ~15:30 — arrive early for the best street food before crowds peak.

🗓 Every Saturday | 16:00–22:30

🧶 Wualai Saturday Walking Street (ถนนคนเดินวัวลาย)

📍 Wualai Road, south of the Old City moat, Chiang Mai

Wualai Road is Chiang Mai’s historic silversmithing district, and every Saturday evening it transforms into a more local, less touristy alternative to the Sunday Walking Street. You’ll find high-quality silverwork and brass crafts at better prices, alongside excellent northern Thai street food. The atmosphere is relaxed and neighbourhood-focused.

What makes it special: Many silver and brass vendors here are the actual artisans — you can often watch them work in workshop doorways. Northern Thai snacks like Khao Soi, Nam Prik Noom, and Miang Kham are staples at the food stalls.

🚗 Getting There: Walk south from the Old City moat via Wualai Road (~5 min from the south gate, Chiang Mai Gate). Grab from Nimman: approx. ฿80–100, 10 minutes.

🗓 Every Saturday Evening | 17:00–22:00 | 🆕 Added

🏮 Sankamphaeng Walking Street (ถนนคนเดินสันกำแพง)

📍 Sankamphaeng Road, Sankamphaeng District (~13 km east of Chiang Mai)

Sankamphaeng is famous as the “handicraft corridor” — a long road lined with umbrella-painting workshops, celadon pottery factories, silk weaving studios, and lacquerware showrooms. Every Friday and Saturday evening, the main street transforms into a lively walking street market with local food vendors, live music, and craft stalls. It draws a strongly local crowd and feels distinctly different from the Old City markets — more community festival, less tourist shopping strip.

What to expect: Northern Thai street food (khanom jeen, sai oua, mango sticky rice) · Locally made crafts at workshop prices · Live folk and mor lam music · Traditional dance shows · The umbrella-painting village (Bo Sang) is nearby and open late on market nights.

🚗 Getting There: Blue songthaews run the Chiang Mai–Sankamphaeng route from the Chang Puak bus station area, fare ~฿20–30 per person. By Grab/taxi: ~฿150–200 from the Old City (20–25 min). By motorbike: East on Highway 1006 from Tha Phae Gate.

🗓 FRIDAY – SUNDAY MORNINGS | 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

🥘 Kad Bapao Night Market (กาดบะป๊าว)

📍 Bapao Area, Mueang Chiang Mai District (northern outskirts, near Bapao Junction)

Kad Bapao is one of Chiang Mai’s most beloved local evening markets — a sprawling mix of fresh produce vendors, cooked-food stalls, street snacks, household goods, and cheap clothing, all packed tightly under tarpaulin roofs with families doing their weekday shopping. “Kad” is Northern Thai dialect for market, and this one is the real deal.

Why visit as a traveller: Authentic local atmosphere far from tourist crowds · Some of the cheapest and most flavourful Northern Thai food in the city — sai oua (grilled pork sausage), kanom jeen nam ngiaw, fresh tropical fruit · Great people-watching and immersion in everyday Chiang Mai life.

🚗 Getting There: Located ~8 km north of the Old City, near the Bapao Junction on Highway 107. By Grab, search “กาดบะป๊าว” — typically ฿100–130 from the Old City. By songthaew going north on Highway 107: ask for “Bapao” (บะป๊าว), fare ~฿30–40 per person.

🗓 Every Saturday & Sunday | 06:30–14:00

🧺 Jing Jai Farmers Market (ตลาดจริงใจ)

📍 Intrawarorot Road (near the Old City north moat), Chiang Mai

Frequently Asked Questions

Things to Do in Chiang Mai in March 2026

Common questions answered by the team at Thaan Aoan, Old City Chiang Mai

March 2026 is one of Chiang Mai’s most event-packed months. Top highlights include: Poy Sang Long (Shan novice ordination procession, 19–31 March), Makha Bucha Day + total lunar eclipse (3 March), Holi Festival at CMU (7 March), and the weekly Sunday Walking Street in the Old City. There are also 20+ special events and 9+ markets and walking streets running throughout the month.

Poy Sang Long is a Shan (Tai Yai) novice ordination festival unique to northern Thailand. Boys aged 7–14 are dressed as princes in elaborate silk costumes and jewellery, then carried on shoulders in colourful processions before being ordained as novice monks. In 2026, ceremonies run from approximately 19–31 March across several Shan temples including Wat Ku Tao, Wat Pa Pao, and Wat San Phi Suea. The grand procession (Day 2) is the most photogenic part and is free to attend.

March is rewarding but requires planning. The good: Excellent cultural festivals, very hot dry weather (28–36°C), plentiful mango, and no rain. The challenge: March falls in peak haze season (PM2.5) due to field burning. We strongly recommend checking air quality daily via IQAir or aqicn.org and packing an N95 mask. Outdoor evening activities are generally fine even on moderate air quality days.

Chiang Mai has 9+ markets and walking streets running throughout March: Sunday Walking Street (Tha Phae Gate, every Sunday 16:00–22:00), Wualai Saturday Walking Street (every Saturday 16:00–22:30), Sankamphaeng Walking Street (Friday & Saturday 17:00–22:00), Jing Jai Farmers Market (Sat & Sun 06:30–14:00), and Kad Bapao Night Market (Wed & Thu 17:00–22:00).

Makha Bucha is one of Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist holidays, falling on 3 March 2026 (public holiday — no alcohol sales). In Chiang Mai, the best way to experience it is the candlelit Wien Thian ceremony after sunset at Wat Chedi Luang or Wat Phra Singh — walking three times around the stupa with candles, incense, and flowers. Bonus in 2026: A total lunar eclipse begins at 15:44 local time that same day.

Yes — many of the best experiences in March are free: Sunday Walking Street (free entry), Holi Festival at CMU (free entry), Poy Sang Long procession at Wat Ku Tao (free), Wien Thian ceremony on Makha Bucha Day (free), and the Pet Variety Fair at Central Airport (free entry). Most markets and walking streets are also free to enter.

For authentic local food, Kad Bapao (Wed & Thu evenings) is the most local experience in the city — cheap northern Thai food, zero tourists and great people-watching. For fresh produce and a premium breakfast experience, Jing Jai Farmers Market (Sat & Sun mornings) is unrivalled. For the best nearby sit-down breakfast, Thaan Aoan in the Old City is only 1 minute from Wat Chedi Luang and has been a local favourite since 2007.

Key things to know: (1) Air quality: March is peak haze season — pack an N95 mask and monitor IQAir daily. (2) Alcohol ban on 3 March: Makha Bucha Day means no alcohol sales for 24 hours. (3) Temple etiquette: Remove shoes before entering temples; dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). (4) Getting around: Grab is the most reliable option; red songthaews are cheaper for fixed routes.
