Visakha Bucha Day — Wien Thian Ceremony & Doi Suthep Pilgrimage

Visakha Bucha is Buddhism’s most important holiday worldwide — commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing into nirvana of the Lord Buddha. In Chiang Mai, it is one of the most spiritually beautiful evenings of the year. After sunset, temples across the city fill with thousands of worshippers carrying lit candles, lotus flowers, and incense sticks in a slow three-circuit candlelit walk (Wien Thian) around the main stupa.
The Doi Suthep Night Pilgrimage: Every year, thousands of Chiang Mai residents walk 11 km up the mountain to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep by candlelight. The trek begins at the Kru Ba Srivichai Monument at the foot of the mountain around dusk. It is one of the most profound experiences you can have in northern Thailand — deeply moving, free, and open to all.
Note: All alcohol sales are prohibited for the full 24 hours on Visakha Bucha Day.

Inthakin City Pillar Festival (Sai Khan Dok) — Wat Chedi Luang
Location: Wat Chedi Luang, Phra Pokklao Road, Old City Chiang Mai
The Inthakin Festival is Chiang Mai’s most uniquely local annual celebration. Held over eight days at Wat Chedi Luang, it honours the Sao Inthakin — the sacred city pillar first erected by King Mengrai in 1296 — believed to protect Chiang Mai’s prosperity and bring the life-giving monsoon rains.
Thousands of Chiang Mai residents in traditional Lanna dress make offerings of flowers, candles, and incense at the pillar shrine. The temple is dramatically lit at night with lanterns. On the first day, the Phra Fon Saen Haa Buddha image is carried in a colourful procession around the Old City moat — one of the most photogenic events of the month.
Tips: Evening is the best time to visit — arrive after 17:00. Dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered). Remove shoes before entering temple buildings.

Northern Scooter Show 2026 — Chiangmai Hall, Central Airport
Location: Chiangmai Hall, Central Chiang Mai Airport
Go To Scooter BKK joins forces with Northern Scooter CNX to bring the biggest scooter gathering in Northern Thailand to Chiang Mai. Expect over 500 rare and hard-to-find scooters on display alongside accessories, parts, and merchandise vendors from across the country.
Highlights include a first-ever Dyno Test Racing event in Thailand — scooters going head-to-head to prove their true power — plus special guest appearances and live entertainment throughout the weekend.
Admission: ฿100 per person (valid both days). Includes a special event souvenir.
Getting There: Grab from the Old City: approx. ฿80–120 (10–15 min). Easy parking on-site inside the mall complex.

Sanpakoi Street Market — First Sunday Market
Location: Walkway in front of Anusarn Building, Charoen Mueang Road, Chiang Mai
A friendly neighbourhood street market held on the first Sunday of each month. A very local morning browsing experience with food, drinks, snacks, and coffee stalls. A mix of community vendors and Chiang Mai regulars with plenty of easy grab-and-go options for a relaxed Sunday start.
Tips: Arrive early for the best selection. Bring cash for small stalls. Pairs nicely with a riverside walk around the Sanpakoi and Charoen Mueang area.

Chiang Mai Pride 2026 — Parade & Community Celebration
📍 Parade Route: Phutthasathan Monastery → Tha Phae Gate, Old City
Chiang Mai Pride is an annual LGBTQ+ celebration and one of the most significant pride events outside Bangkok. The main parade departs from the Phutthasathan Monastery (Buddhist Center) with a flash mob before moving through the city streets toward Tha Phae Gate, arriving around 20:00. Expect colourful floats, community groups, live performers, and a genuinely warm local atmosphere. All are welcome — locals, expats, and visitors alike.
At Tha Phae Gate: Booths, food stalls, and a stage welcome the parade from 13:00 onward. The gate area fills up well before the parade arrives and is the best spot to watch the procession come in.
Supporting events at Pantip Lifestyle Hub (23–30 May): Art and photography exhibition, LGBTQ+ workshops and panels, and the Elderly Pride Ambassador competition. Free entry throughout.
Practical note: This falls on the same weekend as the Inthakin Festival at Wat Chedi Luang and the Northern Scooter Show at Central Airport — one of the busiest weekends of the month in Chiang Mai.

Location: Tha Phae Gate to Wat Phra Singh, Ratchadamnoen Road, Old City
Chiang Mai’s biggest weekly market closes Ratchadamnoen Road to traffic every Sunday evening. Over 500 vendors line the 1 km stretch selling hand-crafted jewellery, silverwork, silk scarves, wood carvings, ceramics, and an enormous variety of street food. It’s the single best night for strolling the Old City.

Location: Wualai Road, south of the Old City moat
Chiang Mai’s historic silversmithing district transforms into a lively market every Saturday evening. High-quality silverwork and brass crafts at better prices than the Sunday market, alongside excellent northern Thai street food. The atmosphere is relaxed and neighbourhood-focused.

What makes it special: Many silver and brass vendors are the actual artisans — you can often watch them work in workshop doorways. Northern Thai snacks like Khao Soi, Nam Prik Noom, and Miang Kham are staples at the food stalls.

Sankamphaeng Walking Street (ถนนคนเดินสันกำแพง)
Location: Sankamphaeng Road, ~13 km east of Chiang Mai
Sankamphaeng is famous as the “handicraft corridor” — a road lined with umbrella-painting workshops, celadon pottery factories, silk weaving studios, and lacquerware showrooms. Every Friday and Saturday evening it becomes a lively walking street with local food vendors, live music, and craft stalls. It draws a strongly local crowd.

Kad Bapao Market (กาดบะป๊าว)
Location: Bapao Area, Mueang Chiang Mai District (northern outskirts)
Kad Bapao is one of Chiang Mai’s most beloved local morning markets — a sprawling mix of fresh produce vendors, cooked-food stalls, street snacks, household goods, and cheap clothing. “Kad” is Northern Thai dialect for market, and this one is the real deal.

Jing Jai is the best morning market in Chiang Mai for fresh produce, organic goods, and a genuinely local weekend breakfast. Direct-from-farm organic vegetables, artisan cheeses, fresh juices, excellent coffee, handmade ceramics, vintage clothing, and some of the best breakfast food in the city.
In May: Every Saturday and Sunday. Also home to the Minimal Rustic Market on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Fridays (May 8, 15, 22).
Tips: Arrive by 07:00 for the freshest produce and best seats. By 10:00 it’s busy; by 13:00 many vendors start packing up.

A curated lifestyle and vintage market with a strong aesthetic identity — aged wood, muted tones, handmade goods, upcycled fashion, artisan ceramics, specialty coffee, and indie food vendors. It attracts a creative, design-conscious crowd and is a favourite for anyone wanting something more boutique than the large weekend markets.

Essential Tips for Visiting Chiang Mai in May
Weather
Hot and humid (30–38°C). Afternoon or evening rain showers become more frequent from mid-May. Pack a compact umbrella or light rain jacket for any outdoor plan.
Air Quality
May is dramatically cleaner than March–April. The burning season is over. Air is generally breathable with no N95 mask needed. Check IQAir if you are sensitive.
Inthakin & Visakha Etiquette
Remove shoes before entering temples. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). This is especially important during Inthakin evenings at Wat Chedi Luang and on Visakha Bucha Day.
Getting Around
Grab is the most reliable option for point-to-point. Red songthaews are cheaper for fixed routes. Bicycles and motorbikes are ideal within the Old City and Nimman.
Alcohol Ban — 31 May
All alcohol sales are prohibited for the full 24 hours on Visakha Bucha Day. Plan accordingly — restaurants and bars will not serve alcohol.
Language
A few Thai words go a long way: Sawasdee Krap/Ka (hello), Kob Khun Krap/Ka (thank you), Pet Nit Noy (a little spicy). Vendors at local markets appreciate the effort.
