Quick Overview
Why Chiang Mai Feels Unlike Anywhere Else in Thailand
Chiang Mai is famous for temples, mountains, and night markets — but the “why” behind the city is what makes it unforgettable. Its Lanna roots, the near-perfect Old City moat, the ancient Yi Peng lantern tradition, Songkran around the moat, and a dense concentration of temples are five reasons the city feels different from anywhere else in Thailand. First time here? Start with our Chiang Mai 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors.

Fun Fact #1
Chiang Mai Is Older Than Thailand Itself
King Mengrai founded Chiang Mai in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom — and the location was no accident. Surrounded by mountains on one side and nourished by the Ping River on the other, the area offered fertile land, a reliable water source, and natural defenses: everything a thriving ancient capital needed.
Over the centuries, Lanna went through major political changes before becoming part of modern-day Thailand. Yet Chiang Mai has never lost its identity. With a cultural heritage spanning 700+ years, the city still carries its own language (Kham Muang), traditional writing (Lanna script), distinctive architecture, local cuisine, and a way of life shaped by Northern Thai history.
That’s why visiting Chiang Mai feels different — you’re not just sightseeing; you’re stepping into a living culture with deep roots and a character all its own.
Fun Fact #2
The Old City Moat Is Almost a Perfect Square
Chiang Mai’s moat isn’t a perfect square, but it comes remarkably close — each side measures roughly 1.62 to 1.67 kilometers, depending on the section.
Originally, the moat was an earthwork. Soil was excavated to create a water channel encircling the city, then reinforced over time. Back then, the moat and city walls weren’t designed for scenery — they were part of Chiang Mai’s defensive system, built to protect the newly founded city through centuries of conflict.
The moat has been renovated many times. While it may not look exactly as it did in its earliest form, it remains one of the city’s most iconic living landmarks — beautiful, walkable, and packed with history.

Fun Fact #3
Yi Peng Is Ancient — But the Mass Lantern Sky Is Modern Magic
Many people think Chiang Mai’s lantern festival is a recent creation — but the tradition is centuries old. What feels new is the modern mega-scale spectacle, where thousands of sky lanterns rise at once and flood the night sky.
In Chiang Mai, the celebration is tied to Yi Peng (a Lanna tradition) around the same time as Loy Krathong on the full-moon night. It’s a season of gratitude — especially toward the water that sustains farms and daily life — and a symbolic act of letting go. Releasing a lantern represents sending away bad luck and negative energy, making space for a brighter start.
Beyond lanterns, families light candles and decorate homes and temples, creating a warm glow across the city. In the past, lanterns were released in smaller numbers as a personal act of merit-making. Today, large events have transformed it into one of the most photographed spectacles in the world.
Fun Fact #4
Chiang Mai Is One of the Best Places for Songkran
Songkran marks Thailand’s traditional New Year and originally began as a respectful ritual: gently pouring water over elders’ hands to ask for blessings and good fortune. Over time, it evolved into the joyful, city-wide water celebration the world knows today.
What makes Songkran in Chiang Mai stand out is the blend of Lanna heritage and the Old City layout. Temples and locals bring the festival to life through decorations, traditional clothing, and meaningful customs you can feel everywhere you go.
And then there’s the city’s secret weapon: the Old City moat. During Songkran, the moat becomes the heart of the action — people loop around it, splash water, and greet each other with “Sawasdee Pee Mai” (Happy New Year).

Fun Fact #5
The Old City Is Packed With Temples
Within the compact square of the Old City, you’ll find dozens of temples (wats) — from the towering ruins of Wat Chedi Luang to the golden serenity of Wat Phra Singh. Few cities anywhere pack this much sacred history into such a walkable area.
Because everything sits so close together, you can explore several centuries-old temples on foot in a single morning, then pause for coffee and breakfast before the afternoon heat. It’s one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to experience Chiang Mai’s living Lanna culture.

Trinkgeld. Einfach nur top.Posted on Google SabineTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. 🫶🏼Posted on Google Ashxen -Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The food here is amazing. The Khaoo soi!!
